As an EMDR and trauma therapist, I often encounter confusion about different types of dissociative experiences. While many of us experience normal dissociation (like getting lost in a good book or zoning out during a long drive), structural dissociation is a distinct response to trauma that requires specialized therapeutic support.

I created this guide to help fellow mental health professionals and clients understand this crucial distinction. Understanding where a client falls on the dissociation spectrum can inform our treatment approach and help determine when deeper trauma work may be needed.
